Why interior design matters

Readers judge a book by its cover, then by its first page. Cramped margins, inconsistent spacing, awkward chapter openings and the wrong typeface signal “amateur” within seconds, even if the writing is excellent. Professional typesetting is invisible when it’s done well. The reader simply settles in and reads.

Our designers typeset books the way traditional publishers do, with attention to typography, white space, line breaks and the details that make a book comfortable to read for hours.

Print book typesetting

We design your paperback or hardcover interior around your genre and trim size. That means choosing a body typeface that suits the tone of your book, setting margins and gutters that keep text clear of the spine, and designing chapter openings, headers and page numbers that feel cohesive.

We also fix the problems that DIY layouts miss: widows and orphans, rivers of white space, hyphenation stacks and pages that end with a single line. The result is a print-ready PDF with correct bleed and embedded fonts, ready to upload.

eBook formatting

Ebooks behave differently from print. Text reflows to fit each device and readers can change font size, so your file needs clean code underneath. We build reflowable EPUB files with a linked table of contents, properly sized images and styling that displays correctly on Kindle, Apple Books, Kobo, Nook and Google Play Books.

For children’s books, cookbooks and photo-heavy titles where layout must stay fixed, we create fixed-layout ebooks.

Formatting and typesetting FAQs

What is the difference between formatting and typesetting?

Typesetting is the design of the printed page: fonts, margins, spacing, headers and how text flows across a spread. Formatting usually refers to preparing files to meet a retailer’s technical requirements. We handle both for print and ebook.

Which files will I receive?

You receive a print-ready PDF for paperback and/or hardcover, a reflowable EPUB for ebook retailers, and on request a Kindle-ready file. Source files can be provided too.

Can you format books with images, tables or footnotes?

Yes. We format photo books, cookbooks, workbooks, academic titles with footnotes and endnotes, and children’s books with full-page illustrations, including fixed-layout ebooks where needed.

Do you follow Amazon KDP and IngramSpark requirements?

Every file is built to the trim size, bleed, margin and gutter requirements of the platforms you plan to use, and checked against their previewers before delivery.

How long does formatting take?

A standard novel or non-fiction book is typically formatted in five to seven business days. Illustrated and complex layouts take longer.

What if I find an error after formatting?

Small corrections are included. We recommend a proofread of the formatted pages before you publish so any last issues are caught.
